• Bulgaria is a rising star on the sunshine holiday circuit, offering an intriguing alternative to Spain, France and Italy. Along the country’s Black Sea coast there are big holiday resorts and smaller destinations. Such variety makes it the perfect place for families to travel to this year – plus it gets exceptionally warm in summer (May to October)! Below are some of the things you should expect from a Bulgaria holiday, as well as some of the destinations you might visit.

    A family atmosphere

Family holidays in Bulgaria are characterised by laidback beach vibes, safe bathing and plenty of activities. In our experience, families with very young kids tend to prefer quieter resorts, such as St Vlas and Sinemorets, as opposed to the livelier Sunny Beach.

That said, the sight of hotels and restaurants in Sunny Beach full of families having an amazing time is a common one. This is probably down to the Blue Flag beach, which is both a sunbather’s paradise and a water sports hub.

    Stunning sunshine

The sun is out just about all the time during the summer in Bulgaria, with temperatures in July and August rising above 30°C regularly. The water is also warm and calm, making it a good place for young families to spend some time in and around the water. If you decide to travel towards the end of summer, you’ll experience beach weather but may find it a little cooler in the evenings.

    All-inclusive luxury

With its stylish resorts and hotels, why not try an all-inclusive holiday in Bulgaria? The Hotel Riu Helios is a fantastic choice for families looking to explore Sunny Beach. Bathe in two outdoor pools and dine on feast on delicious foods in the buffet restaurant, and since the beach is so nearby, active families can enjoy everything from water sports to tennis. To those who want to take it a little easier, a poolside massage or some spa treatment may be of interest!

    Sunny Beach

It’s big, bold and a little barmy – Sunny Beach lives up to its name with its breezy outlook and fun-loving atmosphere. In summer, the streets are always buzzing with life. Families can look forward to days spent lapping up the sun, exploring the shops and cafes around the town or splashing around all day at a waterpark.

Music plays often in Sunny Beach, which kids will love, especially if the sounds of the summer happen to be on! If you’re looking for somewhere a little quieter, though, you could always stay in nearby Nessebar. This tranquil town is a splendid retreat and from this base you can start to get acquainted with Sunny Beach and other Black Sea attractions.

    Obzor

Obzor’s sandy shoreline and paddle-friendly waters make it ideal for families, and the family-run restaurants and a village atmosphere keep visitors returning here year after year. Anticipate local shops and stalls selling a variety of merchandise, entertaining days at the beach and local festivals in summer. One of the best things to do in Obzor is book a catamaran cruise in local waters – this will give you a chance to see dolphins!

    St Vlas

One of our favourite Black Sea Resorts is St Vlas, which is neatly tucked between the sea and the Balkan mountains. Soak up the atmosphere at the marina and the resort’s three beaches, where families can spread out in comfort. Restaurants and cocktail bars along the seafront provide somewhere to take your evening meal. You can indulge in a little of the all-inclusive treatment at the Prestige Fort Beach hotel.

Families should definitely consider Bulgaria this year. This welcoming destination may not have been on your radar originally, but now it is!
