• With price being a huge deciding factor for where many of you will be heading abroad this year, we’ve picked some of the best value holiday destinations where your money will be worth more to give you a helping hand.

Bulgaria has always been well known for its cheap and cheerful prices, appearing on ‘best value holiday destination’ lists every year. Grab a local bottle of beer for as little as 62c or a bottle of water for 46c. Head to Irish favourite Sunny Beach, where you’ll find everything from UNESCO-certified landmarks to 8km of Blue Flag-awarded sands, to loads of restaurants and bars to snap up some cheap eats. We’d also recommend a day at Bulgaria’s Action Aquapark Sunny Beach to whizz down the water slides, including a 146-metre-long rafting river or adrenaline-pumping Kamikaze which has a drop of more than 20m, for around €20.

It’s good news for sun-seekers, as Portugal’s Algarve region has been named the most affordable holiday destination for 2017 by the annual UK’s Post Office Money Report. The report, which compares the average cost of a meal for two, drinks, suncream and other items, found the Algarve was the cheapest out of 44 popular holiday destinations. And it’s not just great value that Portugal offers, there’s tonnes to do, too. Why not use your extra savings for a wallet-friendly excursion, like the Albufeira open-top bus tour, where you’ll soak up some of the Algarve’s top landmarks with a knowledgeable guide in tow. You can hop on and off the bus as often as you like for 24 hours, meaning you can really make the most of seeing all that the Algarve has to offer, all for under €18 per person.

Mexico is the third cheapest long-haul destination, according to the Post Office’s report. But just because it’s easy on the pocket doesn’t mean you can’t have a luxury experience. Hotels on the doorsteps of some of the palm-lined beaches, gated resorts with their own 18-hole championship golf course and stylish shopping malls are just a few treats on offer here. Plus, Mexican food is famously delicious, so get a real taste of Mexico by sampling the tacos, enchiladas and tamales without breaking the bank.

Turkey is another destination where you can rely on value. And it’s not just prices like €15 for a dinner for two that keeps holidaymakers flocking to Turkey, the Izmir area is home to the remains of the Temple of Artemis – one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. You can also expect 12 hours of sunshine during the summer months, trendy bars and restaurants, and in Kusadasi  -the famous Grand Bazaar. Over 1,000 stalls compete for space, and traders peddle spices, rugs and Aladdin-style lamps.
