• Cocktails are an essential part of any holiday. What could be better than relaxing on the beach with a mojito or strawberry daiquiri in hand? So, in honour of this poolside staple, we’re bringing you a signature cocktail recipe every month, plus a step-by-step guide showing you how to make them. First up, it’s the mojito…

    This classic Cuban cocktail has been around for much longer than you think – around 500 years to be exact. And, because the simple concoction works so perfectly, it’s still as popular today as it was back in the 16th century when it was first served. Fast forward to today, and you can celebrate said cocktail on 11th July (National Mojito Day) – we’ll cheers to that. It’s made with three ingredients, mint, sugar and rum, and using the right technique is important to get the perfect balance of flavours.

    What you’ll need to make a Mojito

    (Makes one cocktail)


    Crushed ice

    1½ limes, cut into wedges

    Fresh mint leaves

    2 tsp brown sugar or 2 tsp of sugar syrup

    50ml Havana Club white rum

    A splash of soda water, to taste

    A fresh mint sprig to garnish



    The step-by-step method

    Place the limes, sugar and mint into a cold, highball glass.

    Muddle (mash) them together with a cocktail spoon to release the lime juice and mint aromas. Make sure you don’t crush or tear the mint leaves as this will make the drink bitter.

    Add crushed ice.

    Top up with white rum. Mix with a cocktail spoon.

    Add a splash of soda water if you fancy for a refreshing kick.

    Garnish with a fresh sprig of mint and serve.

    Mojitos were once used for medicinal purposes thanks to the high concentration of lime juice which contains a lot of vitamin C.


    Where to find the best mojitos on holiday

    The birthplace of the Mojito is Havana in Cuba, so of course the lively capital city is the best place to try this traditional drink. The famous La Bodeguita del Medio bar is where the tipple originated, and where Ernest Hemingway enjoyed his, so it’s the one place where you have to make a mojito pit stop if you’re in Havana. You can also try a Mojito at Café La Barrita which is an old Bacardi distillery that has been transformed into a trendy Art Deco-style bar. And, there’s also the famous Club Tropicana where you can enjoy the lively bar scene and listen to jazz musicians playing while you drink. Bliss.

    Of course, the Caribbean isn’t the only place where you can enjoy the best mojitos. Although the famous Bacardi brand originated in Cuba, the founder, Don Facundo Bacardi Massó, was actually born in Sitges, Spain. On a trip to Sitges, you can visit the Casa Bacardi museum built in his honour where bartenders will show you how to make a perfect mojito.

    And if you’re Ibiza bound, you’ll be pleased to hear that mojitos are a staple cocktail all over the island. Cap d’es Falco Italian restaurant in Salinas is a firm favourite with locals, while the famous Café Del Mar in San Antonio is the perfect place to grab a mojito while watching the famous Ibizan sunset.
