We have enjoyed many family holidays in the Algarve and each time we visit I think the Algarve is perfect for families. Here are just some of the reasons why.

    It’s easily accessible:

With over 300 days of sunshine, the Algarve is somewhere you can visit at anytime. Getting there is relatively easy. There are daily flights from most Irish airports and a wide choice of resorts and accommodation to choose from. Falcon Holidays feature a staggering 15 resorts in the Algarve with options to suit all families.  Flying time is only 2 and a half hours and transfer times, depending on which resort you choose, can be from as little as 30 minutes.

    It’s great value:

The numerous flight options and accommodation choices make the Algarve good value for your family holiday.  But it’s not only getting there that is reasonable. Day to day living is inexpensive too. A set 3 course menu in a local restaurant will set you back €15 – €20 and a beer or glass of wine is approximately €2! If you like having everything accounted for before you go, try some of the Falcon Holidays all-inclusive resorts, which are also great value, where meals and drinks are included in the price of your stay.

Some of Europe’s best beaches are in the Algarve:

There are over 150 beaches in the Algarve and many of them are long wide sandy beaches, which are perfect for children.  We spent many days sunbathing on the beach in Alvor while the kids happily built sandcastles and looked for crabs in the nearby rock pools. Other favourites of mine are Meia Praia beach in Lagos and Praia da Falésia near Albufeira. The sea water is cooler than the Mediterranean which is a welcome relief from the warm temperatures in the summer months.

It is full of family friendly resorts.

When you decide to take a trip to the Algarve, the hardest decision you will make will be deciding which resort to choose. They are all so family friendly – it is a tough task! Choose from lively resorts like Albufeira or Praia da Rocha, glitzy Vilamoura or the quieter resort of Alvor. No matter which type of holiday you seek, there is a resort to suit you. Hotels and apartments cater so well for children in the Algarve, with most having separate kids pools, kids club and a family entertainment program. Falcon Holidays offer a wide choice of family properties which cater specifically for families. You can narrow your search by clicking on ‘families’ in the TYPE section or choose whether you want a day time activity program, mini disco, games room or free WiFi in the ACCOMMODATION section. All-inclusive properties are becoming more and more popular. There is no need to bring large amounts of spending money as meals, drinks and entertainment are included in the price of your stay.  Select all-inclusive in the BOARD section on the website.

There is lots to see and do!

Family holidays are all about beach and pool fun, but sometimes it’s nice to get out and about and visit some of the local attractions. The Algarve offers family fun days in abundance. Most resorts offer boat trips around the coast with options for fishing, dolphin spotting or just a relaxing look along the coast. There are many theme parks to choose from, my personal favourite is Zoomarine. This combines dolphin, seal and bird shows with a splash park with slides for kids.  Water park enthusiasts can choose from Slide and Splash or Aqualand and Parque Aventura offers a wide choice of high rope and zip line courses for all the family. There are also plenty of options for karting, mini golf and water-sports.

Culture vultures will love the 8th century Moorish castle in Silves. One of the Algarve’s best preserved forts is a rare sight that can be of interest to all ages.
