Be aware that the SPF number relates to how long your skin is protected

Higher numbers mean longer protection rather than a higher level of protection from the sun. Lower numbers will need to be re-applied more often. Take into account sweating and swimming and reapply more regularly as a result. An average adult will need at least 30ml sunscreen to cover their entire body

    Sunscreen isn’t enough

In hot, sunny countries, you’ll need more coverage than sunscreen alone. Wear a hat, sunglasses to protect your eyes and clothing to cover your skin. Dark fabrics, cotton and linen are great for blocking UV rays. A wide brimmed hat is best for protecting the back of your neck and quality sunglasses are essential for adults and kids alike.

    Choosing your sunscreen

Check for the UVA star rating on the bottle, opting for a minimum of three stars which provides good protection from ageing sun rays. The SPF relates to UVB or protecting your skin from burning, so it’s wise to choose a product that provides good levels of both UVA and SPF/UVB (15 or over)

    Application

Apply sun screen 10-20 minutes before exposing your skin to the sun. It makes sense to do it in the morning before getting dressed, asking someone to help you with hard to reach areas such as your back so you don’t miss any bits. Don’t forget ears and feet too as these are prone to burning! Reapply after swimming, towel drying and sweating once skin is dry, or choose a product such as Piz Buin Wet Skin Transparent SPF which allows for immediate application on wet skin.

‘Once a Day’ products should still be reapplied according to the British Association of Dermatologists

    Don’t forget your hair

…and your scalp! An SPF hair product will protect the delicate skin on your scalp while helping to maintain the condition of your hair and its colour. Clarins Broad Spectrum SPF30 Sunscreen Care Oil is a non-greasy dry oil that will not only protect your head and hair from the sun, but the texture should help prevent damage from chlorine and salt too as your hair will absorb much less water when treated with oil first. Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil is a gorgeous smelling waterproof mist that will help to minimise hair colour fading in the sun

    After sun

Take a multipurpose product to soothe your skin after sun Exposure. The Trilogy ‘Everything Balm’ fixes everything and is ideal for the entire family. Use it on dry, chapped skin, on lips, as a massage oil and moisturising the skin on your face and body, €17.95
